Foam is still the best type of material for packaging because it is lightweight, durable, and can be molded into any shape. There are many types of foam packaging ranging from differences in material (expanded polystyrene, PE, PU, cross-linked) to use and form (ESD protection, pouch, wrap, rolls, tubing, blocks, egg box, etc).
Here are some of the different types of foam used in packaging applications:
- Expanded Polystyrene (EPS): EPS foam is a lightweight and versatile material that can be molded into any shape. It is commonly used for packaging fragile items such as electronics and glassware1.
- Polyethylene (PE): PE foam is a closed-cell foam that is resistant to moisture and chemicals. It is commonly used for packaging food products and medical supplies2.
- Polyurethane (PU): PU foam is a soft and flexible foam that is commonly used for cushioning and shock absorption. It is commonly used for packaging electronics and other delicate items3.
- Cross-linked Polyethylene (XLPE): XLPE foam is a closed-cell foam that is resistant to moisture and chemicals. It is commonly used for packaging medical supplies and electronics3.
Each type of foam has its own benefits when used for packaging applications. For example, EPS foam provides excellent insulation properties while PE foam provides excellent cushioning properties.
Packaging Foam Shapes and Extrusions
In addition to the materials used, certain shapes and types of foams are applicable to packaging as below:
Foam Sheets: Foam packaging sheets are pre-cut sheets that are easily available for use during packaging or storing. They are usually thin, around ⅛ mm to 1mm thickness, and used for interleaving fragile items before putting them in a moving box.
Foam Rolls: Foam wrap rolls are continuous sheets of foam that can be cut into any size and shape. They are perfect for providing padding for large items that require protection against scratches and abrasions during transit1.
Foam Extrusions: Foam extrusions are foam products that have been extruded into a specific shape or profile. They are commonly used for sealing and cushioning applications.
Foam Pouches: Foam pouches are small bags made of foam that are used to protect small items during shipping or storage.
Foam Tubes: Foam tubing is a type of foam that is shaped like a tube. It is commonly used for cushioning and protecting items during shipping or storage.
Foam Blocks: Foam blocks are large blocks of foam that can be cut into any size and shape. They are commonly used for cushioning and protecting large items during shipping or storage.
